Ya know, it's not really butter for my kids, but FLOUR! Oh, my daughter simply can't resist it (regardless of the amount of baking soda or salt that it's been mixed with, too!)...by the 5-licked-sticky-finger-full she regularly changes the chemical balance of every baked recipe around our house. I always forget, leave her unattended as the flour-wisker, and find her face, hands, and counter covered. A couple weeks ago we were making pancakes and, after I commandeered the bowl from her, I turned to see her full-face-down LICKING the streaks of flour off the counter! One girl's trash is another girl's treasure....and one girls tasteless, pasty powder gunk is another ones irresistible dessert, I guess. :) Butter: nice. It does look like that would be fun though. I can see why they are tempted, there is something satisfying about that :) Try getting them a water snake. I think I found one at Walgreens last year. They are so much fun you get to squish and have the fun of wondering where it will go rather than worrying about a mess. Or a stress reliever ball those are fun to squeeze too! Too funny!
