March 2010

Ever tried to pack cupcakes in a lunch box?  It creates a gooey mess all over the sandwich baggie and takes all the fun out of eating it when your hands are covered in icing.

I saw this handy little trick in one of my student’s lunches back in my teaching days.

Take your plain cupcake.

Slice it in half.

Take a glob of icing.

Spread it in the middle of the cupcake.

Push it back together.

And now you can stick it in the baggie without worrying about smearing icing all over the place.

I typically set aside a few cupcakes each time I make them so my husband can enjoy one in his lunch.  Icing the middle of the cupcakes totally works for me when packing cupcakes in his lunch.

As we were walking out the door this morning, I heard my daughter exclaim, “Oh it’s raining, better grab my umbrella!”

I wondered what she was talking about since we don’t have any umbrellas in our house.  (Who needs one more thing to juggle? We just get wet, it’s the circus way)!   Then I saw her walking to the car with her Little People umbrella over her head.  She then carried this umbrella over her head into and out of the grocery store.  Wasn’t very effective for blocking the rain, but certainly gave this Momma a chuckle on a wet and dreary day!

Linking this post to both wordless and word full Wednesday carnivals.

I know you’ve heard of comfort foods…typically something warm and gooey that reminds you of home or growing up or just makes you feel good inside.

Well, this preggo woman has comfort clothes.  And they aren’t pretty.  IMG_6575OK, let me explain.  (oh, how I wish there was a good explanation…)  When I was pregnant with my son I got to be so, ahem large, that I started stealing shirts from Scott’s tee shirt drawers…Not to wear in public mind you, but I did wear them around the house so I could save my “cute “maternity clothes for when I saw people.  And since I am so considerate, I stayed away from shirts he typically wore and went for the ones in the back of the drawer.

IMG_6578And that is where this one comes in.  Let’s take a closer look, shall we?   Rumor has it he got this shirt on the family cross country trip in 1994.  It was a wonderful, memory filled trip and this shirt was one of the coveted, carefully chosen souvenirs.

I have no real good explanation for why I chose it though, Indian clothing isn’t typically my style.  But, you can’t choose who you love, you know?  Love chooses you.

And so it became my comfy preggo shirt.  Ya know the one you slip into when you get home from work?

Only with pregnancy number 2, 3, and 4, work was at home and so I slipped into it a little more often.  And sad to say, for some reason, love blinded me, and  I lost sight of what it was I was wearing and perhaps I began wearing it with greater frequency.

As in, my sister in law caught me in it when she was over one day and said, “Didn’t Scott get that shirt on our cross country trip?”  busted…. I had worn it in front of company. What have I turned into?

Yea, pretty sure Stacy and Clinton will be showing up on my door step any day now.

I was cleaning the bathroom yesterday (I know, miracles never cease, huh?) when my 2 and 1/2 year old daughter came in to use the potty.  “Go ahead,” I told her.   (Have I mentioned that I LOVE the fact that all 3 kids can use their potty on their own, ah sweet bliss—for 11 more weeks!)  Well I turned from scrubbing the tub to see her standing beside the potty.

“I want to go this way!” she says (body standing facing the potty)

“You can’t” I told her and lifted her onto the seat.

“No” she screams, “I don’t want to go this way, I want to go like this,” she pouts and get down from the potty again turning to face the potty… like her older brother does.

Now she’s been going potty like a big girl for months and this has never come up.  She also has a big sister and a Mommy at home, so it’s not like she’s never seen anyone sit on the potty before and all she is used to is watching boys stand and aim.

But as 2 yr olds often do, she dug her heels in and for whatever odd reason was declaring this her battle ground for the moment.

“Honey, you can’t go potty like that.”  I tell her.  “Your a girl and girls don’t pee that way. We can’t.  We don’t have a ***** (not going to type the word b/c I don’t want to end up on those google search engines)   Mommy and big sister sit on the potty and that’s what you have to do too.”  Again I stick her up on the seat.

Again she jumps down with a big pouty lip and cries of frustration.

“Fine, then I am not going potty!”  And out of the bathroom she storms.

As is often the case with the battles of a 2 yr old, the storm passed.  I finished scrubbing the tub and got dinner on the table.  She returned to the potty later and since I didn’t see any pee on the floor, I can only assume she chose to sit rather than stand. (thank goodness)

All I could do was laugh.  Ah, the battles we fight…the discussions we have, the words that come out of our mouths… we could have never foreseen them before becoming moms… now, nothing surprises me.

The other day after quiet time my oldest emerged from his room with his first book.  I knew nothing of his project until he emerged but was blown away by what he produced.  On the cover page his listed himself as the “osr” and “iliusha” (author and illustrator).   For his first book, he pretty much spells out the gospel message in word and pictures.

Page One:  “God loved us”  (I must say the spelling on this one def made me chuckle).

Bible Book 003

Page Two: God made the stars.  God made the moon, God made the sun. God made the flowers.

Page 3: Jesus Loves You.

Jesus Loves You.

Page 4:  has the tomb with the stone in front, and then Jesus outside of the tomb (notice the marks on his hands?) and the angel in front of the empty tomb.

Jesus outside of the tomb

Last page:  The End.  (notice the bar code at the bottom?)

bible book page 6

When he showed it to us, my husband immediately said he wanted to scan it into the computer.  When my son heard this he said, “Oh, if you want to scan it then hold on…and he went and drew the “bar code” on the back.

I have many pictures and cards he’s made over the past years, but this is def one of my most treasured.  I love that he spelled it all on his own, I love the pictures he drew, but most importantly, I love the story he chose to tell.
