Darndest Things

One of the many reasons why life is easier this time around is that my older three kids are much  more self sufficient.

When we need to head out the door, I can instruct the kids to get their shoes on, go to the van and buckle up.  A few minutes later the baby and I  arrive at the van.  I buckle him in, do a quick seatbelt check on the big kids and we hit the road.

This works wonderfully…

except for when it doesn’t…

Like the time I pulled into the parking lot at church, open the side door and find my 5 yr old barefoot.  When questioned about her missing shoes, she responded, “ I couldn’t find them!”   As I sent her to SS barefoot her sweet teacher (and mother of 6) assured me it wasn’t the first time (which actually made me wonder, if she meant it wasn’t the first time someone came to SS with no shoes or if it wasn’t the first time MY DAUGHTER came to SS without shoes…I didn’t ask).

Then there’s my three year old, who when faced with a similar dilemma, went a different route.

And of course mom doesn’t realize she’s not wearing matching shoes until she gets out of the van at the grocery store.

(yes…her dress in on backwards…another by product of our self sufficiency)

Apparently, I have a few questions I need to add to my check list before backing out of the driveway.  1.  Is everyone here?  2.  Seatbelts buckled? 3.  Shoes on?  4.  Shoes match?

I think there is something about the age of 3 that makes kids say some of the cutest things.  Lately, our 3 year old has been cracking me up and I have to write them down lest I forget…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week Scott was playing catch with our oldest son.  She of course wanted a turn as well.  Scott said sure and then she said, “Dad, can I get closer to you when I throw the ball, since I am a girl?” (Scott told her she could get closer, but not b/c she was a girl, but b/c she was younger).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I went to a baby shower for a friend of mine.  She is pregnant for her 3rd child, but it is her first girl.  My son asked why she was having a baby shower since she had already had babies.  I told him that it was b/c this baby was a girl.  “Oh, he said, so when you had ******** did you have a baby shower too?”  I told him I did after she was born, when we found out she was a girl, my friends threw me a party and gave me lots of girlie clothes and things.  Then my 3 yr old piped up, Well, Mom, I know that you definitely gave me a baby bath when I was a baby.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday we finally, FINALLY had some sunshine and warm air here in MD.  The temps reached the high 80s and as we were driving home she announced, “Mom, I am B-O-V  hot.”  (we seem to have a little work to do on spelling… but hey, she’s only 3)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My kids love telling jokes and she doesn’t want to be left out.  Sometimes however, she misses the punch line just a bit.

“Mom?”

what

“Aren’t you glad I didn’t say bananas?”

Some of my favorite times are when we all are sitting together as a family, belly laughing… I truly love this phase of our life and wish I could freeze time…hopefully, by writing it down… I can at the very least preserve the memories.  Visit Mary for more tiny talk.

Yesterday my girls had me in stitches with the things they were saying.  I had to go write them down so I wouldn’t forget.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Me:  After you eat we are going to go run some errands
3 year old:  Erin, whose Erin?
Me:  no, we are going to go to some stores
3 year old:  Well, can Erin stay with us while you go to the store?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My 3 yr old came running to me crying over a  boo boo.

I kiss it

3 yr old:  That didn’t help (I inwardly lament the fact that my kiss has lost its magical power when I hear my almost 5 yr old say to her,
”Sometimes when daddy kisses my boo boos it doesn’t help, even though he is a good kisser.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The girls always have their “baby Eli’s” with them wherever they go.  Feeding them, snuggling them, they are always at their sides.  So yesterday when they were watching Snow White I thought it odd to see their baby dolls tucked into the doll crib.  I brought them out to them and my oldest daughter said, “No, we are watching grown up TV right now.  They have to stay in their beds.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I posted this on face book on Sunday, but wanted to record it here so I’d have a record of it.   Sunday afternoon I caught my 3 yr old singing on the potty….

“"We went to church… We worshiped God in church. We ate Chill-ee, we ate chill-ee… God in three persons blessed trinity"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just love this age and the cute little things that come out of their mouths.  For more of the funny things that come out of lil ones mouths, be sure to visit Mary’s blog for Tiny Talk Tuesday.
Nothing like the holidays, to bring on some humor from the lil ones.  Here’s a few I want to record for posterity.
When Scott was talking to my 4 yr old about what she wanted to get me for Christmas, she told him she wanted to get Mommy flowers and she was going to be nice.  To clarify Scott asked, “So your going to be nice as a Christmas gift for Mommy?”  When she affirmed this, he told her that she didn’t have to wait until Christmas to be nice.  She could start then.  She then answered, “Oh no Daddy, I don’t want to give away the surprise!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On Christmas Eve my son came up to me and asked if we had to give Santa the “shape cookies” (meaning the ones we cut out with cutters and decorated)  I told him that Santa would be happy with any cookie they left for him.  He then whispered to me so the girls couldn’t hear, “Good, b/c since I know it’s just you and Dad that eat them, I don’t want to waste them on you.”

Here my 3 yr old shows off the precious cookies her brother didn’t want to waste on ol Mom & Dad!

I found my 3 yr old like this during nap time today… it seems baby doll has been displaced from her bed.

It reminded me of a picture I snapped a few weeks ago of both on my girls as we found them when we peeked in on them before going to bed.

YES… they are both sleeping INSIDE of their drawers!

And since I am sharing sleeping pics, why not share a few of my lil man snoozing as well?

What is it about a sleeping baby that just makes your heart swoon?

I got a funny e-mail from my mom this morning.  She told me to set the DVR to record Rudolph tonight b/c apparently my 3 yr old needed a refresher in holiday pop culture.

According to my mom…

“We were walking in the mall on Black Friday.  We went to the Build a Bear shop which had been transformed into Santa’s Workshop for Christmas.  They had stuffed snowmen and deer and Santa bears.

I said to her,  "Look it’s Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer!!"

To which she looked at me like I just grew 3 heads and said "A red nose reindeer???"  Really Grandma??”

The DVR has been set… wait till she finds out he can fly too!!

This post is being included in Mary’s Tiny Talk Tuesday.
